My words are my riot.
Gods of Anthem has a new face! New Name! New EVERYTHING!
I love-love-loved my original cover AND name, but after much thought, we’ve given her an upgrade to fit better within her genre, and why not? WE all want MORE people to read this series, so here she is…. (drumroll please) THE LAST CITY. Same book, cool new name and cover.
AND. She’s 99cents. Today đ Yes. Right now, CLICK HERE!: Share. Share. SHARE!

Book two in the Gods of Anthem series is gearing up for release. I’ve added it Goodreads with a blurb:
“Following the best-selling novel Gods of Anthem, La la Land is a must-read for fans of dystopian and YA fiction. This sequel delivers in an epic tale of survival until the heart-stopping finale.
From prodigy to prisoner, to revolutionary, Liza, along with Tommy, continues the struggle for freedom against the new world order and evil regime. This time, the soldier and rebel will search for allies together across a destroyed America.”
This is not the official cover but….

I hate writing blog posts nowdays. I really do.
I especially hate writing them TO writers. Like I have a clue what Iâm doingâŚ.
But this recent advice stuck with me. It nags to be shared.
Iâm a week away from pushing a little watermelon with hands and feet into the world, walking in the rain to take my kindergartner to school, finding magical burritos (see facebook post) at the gas station, and basically sitting in my dirty house, wondering if anyone notices that I have not cleaned anything thatâs fallen on the floor for a month because I canât bend over. (picture waist above spotlessâŚ.)
Why am I telling you this?
Because I still feel motivated to do my edits on La la Land, re-read it for proofing, and write not only a freaking blog post, but also my other super-secret novel. Iâm chipping away over here despite my lack of motivation and I wanted you to know why.
But firstâŚ.
Let me guess where you are at in your writing.
Right now youâre gearing up for the next, or finishing it. Maybe middling the helk out of it. Youâre writing blurbs, or querying agents, or editing. And of course, you might be at a standstill.
Am I a mind reader? No. I just know there are only so many places you can be. And most of those spots require a modicum of self-motivation.
You see, we donât have a boss breathing down our necks, checking our work, screaming incoherently at meetings, or even calling us to ask why weâre late. We ARE our own boss.
I chuckle when people try and imagine that. They usually think of the wonderful wonder of being ones own master. When I started working at home for my company, I TOO skipped-to-my-loo to my desk for about a month in an obnoxious bliss. I was so incredibly motivated, making myself coffee, letting the dog out, watching Oprah on my lunch break, but then it hit, the slump. Without people around me to keep me on my toes, I sorta gazed off into spaceâŚindefinitely. I wasnât self-motivating anymore, I was doing the opposite. I didnât want to get out of bed and get ready because who would see me?
I let the dog out, but stood at the window watching her frolic with my 10th cup of coffee before doddling around my empty house like a total rock kicking loser. My employer, of course, noticed right away. They said exactly what they knew they would say, âWorking at home isnât for everyone.â
You see, this company had seen its share of fair-weather workers. And we’ve all seen our share of fair-weather writers. When things are good, they can work from home as easy as pie, but when they slump, there isn’t much help from the little island they’ve sequestered themselves too. With nothing but their thoughts and a deck of cards, tv, refrigerator, that dripping sound, the dog barking at the door, the mailman, the friend coming over, the dinner that need’s making instead of answering that email, the kid who’s sick at homeâŚ
THIS is exactly what happens to writers.
They think, “Oh yeah, Marty. I can work from home with my eyes closed.”
Then some of them do close their eyes, just a little nap right? Pretty soon we’re facebooking and blogging our way out of every single thing we should be writing.
But this post I saw online yesterday reminded me of what this ole world is about. It gave me perspective.
The Grind.

Sure, the struggle is real, but hustle is the realest.
The grind is what you have to focus on. There is NOTHING but the grind. Meditate on that a moment. The rest is just fluff. Extra. NOT A FACTOR.
Write a few words. Go ahead, Iâll wait. Thatâs the real grind. You know how I know?
Because itâs in the name: Writer.
I donât care HOW famous you are, fans are always going to ask, âWhen will they WRITE another?â
Your agent and publisher love you kissing babies like itâs election time, sure, but they count the days until you do it all over again.
And if youâre like me, youâve only got one book or less out there, and so youâve gotta and I mean GOTTA finish another. There’s no guarantee in publishing, but I tell you what, there’s loads more possibilities for people who have more books. Itâs science.
Say it with me now: Stay on that grind.
STAY ON THAT GRIND!

Top Five Life Lessons From Gods of Anthem
5. Zombie bites donât have to turn you.
You know, they just donât. If the zombie has something in his/her saliva that reacts to a personâs body, then why wouldnât there a few people who donât get the full effects of whatever it is a zombie is carrying. Not everyone can avoid the dreaded zombie biteâbut that doesnât mean they canât survive it.
4. Judges that wear wigs are the best kind of judges.
Especially if itâs one of those old-timey white wigs. Those are the best. (Do UK judges still wear those? If so, they rock.)
3. Just because someone starts making out with a guy after he gives her money, doesnât mean sheâs a hooker.
You know how that is, right? Youâre hanging out with a friend (who you think is a prostitute), and guy comes up and slips her a few bills. She takes the money, and they start to go at it on the street. DONâT insinuate thatâs what she does for a living. You might just be wrong.
2. #Team_____ is a real thing.
I never jumped on the #TeamJacob/#TeamEdward thing. (Probably because I never read Twilight.) So I never understood the need for people to âpick a sideâ when it came to two characters. Why canât you just love each of them for them?
But alas, I have succumbed to the phenomenon of team picking. It seems to be a human nature kind of thing, too. As though I donât really have a choice in the matter. I have to pick one or the other . . .
. . .
Okay, fineâ
#TeamTommy
Who agrees with me!
1. However weak and frail a body may be, the spirit inside can give someone an immense amount of strength and determination.
These days, there are more and more strong female characters in books, movies, and television. Females that are brave, intelligent, beautiful, strong, and hold tight to their convictions.
Some characters, though, donât always get to have that spotlighted voice in stories. The character who has trouble getting out of bed in the morning, who has lost all her hair, whose only clothes consists of a grey smock. The character whose offerings come more from within.
Liza, Gods of Anthemâs narrator and main character, leads a life of illness. Sick, bald, and fragile, she keeps her mind strong as she navigates a hellish world of zombies and apocalypse. Through destruction and captivity, her capabilities grow because she doesnât give upâbecause she fights with everything she has.
Liza is the kind of character most people have not seen before. But they need to.
